Review: Get Rocked! In Vegas Anthology

My most anticipated release of the year does not disappoint!

tmp_31251-51Yljl0VfHL._SX260_-1123260483

I will apologize in advance – this is going to be a long review, but this was one anthology I had to read cover to cover, so I am reviewing each story, in order.   But the quick synopsis of the review is Best Anthology of 2017.  Truly not a weak link in here (though I would say the entire book should be for adults only, and open minded ones at that.)  With that out of the way, let’s jump in and enjoy, beginning with the return of Jenna Galicki’s Angel Garcia and Tommy and Jessie Blaze.

The Stage – Jenna Galicki

A great way to kick off the festival!  I will admit it took me a long time to first read Jenna’s books because I wasn’t sure how I felt about the M/M/F storyline,  but once I finally got into it, I couldn’t put it down.  Very fun to see how their punk ‘n roll family has evolved, and kinda fun to see Tommy a bit unsure.  A great addition to the Immortal Angel catalog, and a reminder of how much I would like to see more of them.  I haven’t read any of the Bulletproof series yet, but I found Brandon Bullet completely charming and will have to add those books to my TBR.  I believe I already own the first, time to move it to the top.

I have been looking forward to this anthology for so long, amd this was a great way to start things off!

Beating Hearts by Jade C. Jamison

I have been a huge fan of Ms. Jamison’s for quite some time, and realized as I started reading this that I still have not read the 3rd Vagabonds book – something I will have to rectify soon.  The story can definitely stand as a standalone though, so don’t hesitate to jump right in.

This was a really fun twist from your typical coming of age story.  Brandon is adorable, and I enjoyed seeing all of his insecurities, and his journey toward being comfortable and confident in his own skin.

I can’t forget to add what a thrill it was to see a cameo from my all time favorite book boyfriend, Clay/Jet from Last Five Seconds.  Can’t wait for more LFS stories, and their appearance was a great tease to whet the appetite.

Something Wicked by Theresa Hissong

Heavy Metal has always been predominantly a man’s world, though the previous story by Jade C Jamison features female guitar goddess, Kyle Summers.  Ms His song’s Something Wicked has a newly added bass player, who also happens to be female (and we’ll see several more female rockers throughout this book, which are all great additions. As a 30+ year headbanger myself, it has taken me a long time to realize girls can rock as hard ý I have  as off.  All the women in these tales make it easy to believe that they deserve their spots.  But, I digress….)  It is a pleasure to get the female perspective in this story, from the stage (as opposed to girlfriend/groupie/fangirl/whatever…not that those perspectives don’t work, but they are more more common in the genre.)

Kit and Aiden (the band’s lead singer) are both fightin huge, Forbidden, attraction to each other.  Is it really completely out of the question?  And what secret is Kit hiding?

Alternating viewpoints, intense chemistry and outside drama all add to the greatness this story is.

Rock Casualty by Lisa Gillis

I have forgotten just how much I love and have missed the Loren family.  It’s odd to find Junie all grown up but I absolutely adore her, just as I adore her mom and grandma.   You really need to read all of Lisa Gillis’s books, but this one can stand on its own and is a perfect addition to the Get Rocked lineup.

I had admitted prior to the release that this may have been the story I was most looking forward to, and it certainly did not disappoint!   I want to know more about Crey and his band now too.

I don’t want to giveaway too much, but this is the perfect “it could only happen in Vegas” story.  Junie, basically a runaway bride, winds up in Las Vegas, knowing her brother and sister-in-law will be there the next day, as their band is playing Get Rocked.  Realizing she has not woken up alone, is only the first surprise of her morning.  I loved this story so much.  The ups and downs and craziness, mixed with family love and loyalty,  mixed against a rocking soundtrack, is an art form Ms Gillis has perfected.

Jagged Dawn by Lashell Collins

A perfect mix of rock ‘n roll, romance, drama and joy. It absolutely made me want to reread the entire Jagged Ivory series, but it can easily work as a stand alone as well.  Ms. Collins has done a great job showcasing so much character in her characters in this Novella format.

I continue to enjoy the way characters from other authors’ stories weave together throughout this anthology.  It really sets the bar high for future anthologies I will read – I absolutely love the interactions here, and the way they absolutely fit the characters as if their own authors had written them.

Force by Jennifer L. Allen

Ms. Allen always has a way with her writing that pushes all the right buttons.  From tender emotions to raw heat, she writes in a way that allows you to feel it all.  I am definitely looking forward to reading more about Ash and Lee.

She also did a fantastic job of bringing us to the festival with the bands, brining in the excitement that can only be found at a music festival.  I loved the peaks at all the other bands, and discussions of various band members. Before we got to Vegas, the various Battle of the Bands competitions were the perfect setting up to introduce us to the bands before they were thrown together. Loved every bit of it!

Prelude to a Wicked Wedding by Bella Jeanisse

Ah, a story in a way that could only suit Wicked End!  So many surprises, and nothing that I expected, but it was fantastic!   I can’t wait for the follow up, that’s for sure!

As is true of any of Ms. Jeanisse’s work, this is not for an under 18 crowd, and it is not for every taste, but for those open minded enough, she is the queen of the rock ‘n roll party.  Wicked End is probably the most across the board mayhem, but oh so fun.  I adore Brandon and Tink more with each edition, but I have really come to enjoy all of them, even some I was once sure I would never embrace.

For the down and dirty rock festival atmosphere, you couldn’t ask for more!

 Stand Up and Shout – Maria Bernard

I am particularly fond of Dream Crush, as it was the first Maria Bernard book I immersed myself in, and, let’s face it, I am terminally lost in the 80’s glam metal scene.  I did feel bad for Jay in that book, but even I am surprised by the turn of events we got to witness here.  Kudos once again, Ms. Bernard, you rocked my socks off.

Very nice to revisit SSL and Dream Crush as well.  I totally want to move into the compound.   Ashton, Chloe and Nick always make me smile. I love that I figured out Chloe’s secret before Ashton did, and I certainly hope you have a follow up in the works!

I  love that her writing is getting a bit more risque, with all of the flair she always writes with.  A nice reminder to me of why she is one of my favorite authors, there is just something so comforting in her utter coolness.

The mention of Gray Forrester and These Bones was a nice touch as well.  Basically, though this is quite nice as a standalone in this fantastic anthology, I highly recommend you read every title Ms. Bernard has written.

How long until Crispin’s book is released?  😉

Refrain & Reprise by Sadie Grubor

Before I get to the actual review, I have to make a couple of observations…1) steampunk inspired rock opera?  I want to see this.  Does this exist?  If not, let’s get it happening!  If so, please clue me in.  Thanks to a character in a book by another author in this anthology,  I have developed a slight steampunk obsession.  2) with phrases like “Karma is a mean twat-sickle.” Oh Sadie, I adore the way you coin catchphrases as awesome as this.

Wow, I am almost speechless over this one.  I remember Gemma and Zarek from Jackson’s book (an absolute must read, if for no other reason than it being our introduction to the queen of the world, Sid….and Jackson and Liza absolutely rock, too.)  I thought Gemma was cool as hell and that Zarek was, well, an asshat, but never dreamed I would be so absolutely riveted to their story, or that their chemistry would be so absolutely off the charts.  I think I may love Zora too.  It is hard to top Ms. Grubor in the arena of mouthy, obnoxious and absolutely hilarious females.  Her rockstars are pretty damn hot, too, and the women who love them tend to rock pretty darn hard themselves (even if Mia should be awarded sainthood.)

This is a fantastic addition to the stars family.  I am truly rooting for more, and think I may have to reread HITS again to see what I was overlooking when it came to G and Z.

It is going to be absolutely impossible to pick a favorite in this anthology.  I guessed that going in, but even I am amazed at how much I am loving each and every addition.

Rocking Vegas by Kacey Hamford

I will admit that I am not as familiar with this series as I am the others, but I have read a couple of them with the rest on my TBR.  I have finally gotten to the point that, as a snobby American, the Brit speak doesn’t throw me off the way it used to.

This one is a very different view of Get Rocked and very focused on Flix, which is fine.  Fair warning that it is M/M and if that is not your thing it probably won’t be your favorite in the anthology.  It does have a very interesting conundrum for a premise, and is well written.

Vegas Style by Toni Kenyon

I am finishing this one enthralled by Paul Gray.  He was just too perfect in filling the role of fantasy rockstar.  I am thinking I may have missed a book of Ms Kenyon’s as  I remember Julian,  but have only vague recollections of his brother Sam, and even less of Sam’s band.  I think a bit of catching up is definitely in order!

Ashley was a delight as well.  Heroines don’t often really capture me, but Ashley wasn’t your typical rockstar romance heroine, and I absolutely adored her for it.

Maybe it is something about New Zealanders, but I have found them to be a joy to read.  If I could even stand the thought of being in a plane so long it would be at the very top of my list of places to visit.

Guitar God by Lindy S. Hudis

I am truly impressed with the suspense aspect Ms. Hudis worked into this one.  I found Diego to be a completely charming guitar god, and his girlfriend Susan was just as endearing.  The rest of Medieval Steel are fun as your stereotypical rockstars who have been around the block a few times, though Danny had a few surprises up his sleeve.

The stalker storyline was absolutely chilling and seems to have been well researched (I am not familiar with the technical terms used.)  In a relatively short format, this story packs a whole lot of action, including some sweet sexy times. Mike, the band manager, is another well written and memorable character.  Nothing but praise for this show closer (though I am not ready for it to end – I have thoroughly enjoyed this festival from my air conditioned comfort.)

~~~~~~☆☆☆☆☆☆~~~~~~
Easily the best anthology I have come across, I dare say, ever.  I have read others with a central theme, and some have been quite compelling, but I cannot think of another that comes close to being as interactive throughout.  I was a bit worried that I had been too excited about this one and that it couldn’t possibly live up to the high expectations I had for it.  I needn’t have had any concerns – this far surpassed any dreams I had.  So many great tales woven together here, and done so well.  I hope this talented group of ladies are already planning next year’s Get Rocked festival; I will be first in line for “tickets.”
Release Blitz: Jennifer L Allen’s Hearts Hearts in the Sand (JACT 2)
*****BLOGGER’S NOTE***** First, and foremost, congratulations to Jennifer L Allen on the release of your third book, and the second in the JACT series.  I absolutely adore this book and series for a number of reasons.  I was lucky enough to stumble on Our Moon, her first book, and the first in the JACT series.  I could rave about Our Moon again, but since I have already done that on this blog, you can read about it by clicking the neat little link here :  Blog Tour: Our Moon by Jennifer L. Allen
But today we are here to celebrate, explore and rave about Our Moon’s big brother.  Hearts in the Sand is Trevor’s story, Ally and Alex’s big brother.   I will let you browse through the release blitz post, and then I will expond further on my feelings about this book.  (Although I must profusely apologize to both Jennifer and my readers that I have not yet completed my full review, and unfortunately, am not in the propper head space to do so this morning.  it is at the top of my to-do list, and I will add it ASAP. I do not hesitate in the slightest though to say it is a 5 Guitar Read just like its little sister, without a doubt.) ******
Hearts In The Sand
(JACT Book 2)
by
Jennifer L. Allen
Genre: Contemporary Romance
The last several years of Trevor Monroe’s life have been quite a rollercoaster. He has always been the responsible and dependable one, the one friends and siblings look to for advice, or help bailing themselves out of whatever mess they’ve gotten into. He has certainly earned a month-long vacation to North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Sara Sands loves her life on the Outer Banks. Sure, the road to where she is today hasn’t always been smooth, but she is the proud owner of a successful company, Sand Tours, doing what she loves, and she couldn’t love her niece and nephew more if they were her own. Life is good.
Fate brings Trevor and Sara together and the chemistry between the two kindred spirits cannot be denied. Against both of their natures, they decide to just enjoy the month they have together before Trevor returns home with his family to record their next album and Sara will return to her normal routine of work and family.
Sparks fly and their bond grows overwhelmingly stronger, will they be able to part ways with their hearts intact when the month ends?
EXCERPT
Just as Alex and Joey step out of the building, a muddy Jeep Wrangler comes rushing into the lot and jerks into a parking space, barking its tires. Muttered curse words in the most angelic of tones float across the parking lot and I can’t tear my eyes, or ears, away from the spectacle if I tried.
The most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen gets out of said Jeep, slams the door, and kicks it for good measure. She tips her head back and closes her eyes, her full lips moving but I can’t hear what she’s saying. I wish I could hear what she was saying.
I take a moment to completely check her out: long, tan legs, denim short-shorts, white tank top with pink bikini straps peeking out around her neck. She’s barefoot, and something about that is sexy as hell. Her long, brown hair is in a thick braid down her back.
“Holy hot chick,” Alex says, not quietly, beside me.
Holy Hot Chick straightens herself out, her eyes zero in on our group—all staring in wonder now—probably wondering who had called her “hot chick”, then after staring at us—at me—for a good thirty seconds, huffs and storms into the building.
“Bitches be crazy,” Alex says with a shrug, then hops in the back and begins arguing with Joey about who gets to sit across from Max. “Sit across from your wife…Max wants to sit across from his favorite uncle. Don’t ya buddy?”
“Unca! Unca!”
“Told you!” Alex laughs maniacally. I shake my head; the antics never seem to end.
The side door of the building pops open and the beautiful brunette from the Jeep appears. Smiling and confident, she walks right up to me and sticks her hand out.
“You must be Mr. Monroe. I’m Sara, I’ll be your driver today.”
I’m not entirely sure, but I think my jaw drops for a second before I take her hand and shake. What I’d really like to do is bring her hand up to my lips and kiss it like the goddess I’m positive she must be.
“Trevor. Please, call me Trevor. Mr. Monroe was my dad.” I smile, slightly stumbling over my words.
“This is gonna be epic,” I hear Alex say in a stage whisper behind me. Sad thing is, he probably thought he was actually whispering.
“Sorry about him,” I say, still shaking her hand. “Sorry,’ I grimace, dropping her hand.
“It’s okay,” she smiles. “I guess you’re riding with me?” she asks, raising her brow and drawing my attention from her mouth to the most amazing blue eyes I’ve ever seen.
“Yeah, I’m riding you. With you. I’m riding with you. Shit.” I tip my head back and close my eyes, very similar to how I just saw her a few minutes ago. “I’m sorry,” I say, but I’m not sure she can hear me over Alex and Joey’s uproarious laughter from the back of the truck. I finally open my eyes and chance a look at her and see that she’s laughing a little, too.
“You’ll have to take me to dinner first,” she winks. “As for the tour, why don’t you get in the front seat while I check to make sure everyone’s seat belts are secure?”
“Can you secure my seat belt for me?” Alex asks. “Ow, what the hel—heck did you do that for?” Alex glares at Ally.
“Behave yourself!” she growls.
“Chase, control your woman! Ow! Son of a—! Switch with me Joe, sit across from your kid. Come on.”
“You think my wife won’t kick you?”
“Trev, I’ll sit up front,” Alex says, making a move to rise.
“Sorry,” Sara says, patting Alex on the shoulder. “Trevor’s too tall to sit back here. It’s in the rule book.”
“But I was born a rule breaker, baby.” Alex says, waggling his eyebrows and giving his best grin.
“You were not,” Ally interjects. “If anyone was born a rule breaker, it was me.”
“You were slow. That hardly makes you a rule breaker.”
“I was supposed to be first.”
“And that just means you’ve been failing to meet expectations since birth. Not that you’re a rule breaker.”
Ally glares at Alex, then looks at Chase expectantly. He rolls his eyes, but still elbows Alex in the side.
“Ow, what was that for?”
“Stop disrespecting your sister. You’re being an ass.”
“Language,” Evie calls out.
“Sorry,” Chase says.
“She started it,” Alex complains. “I only said I was born a rule breaker, she’s the one who started arguing with me.”
“Are they always like this?” Sara asks me as we both take a seat in the cab.
“Yes. At least once a day, every day.”
“Brother and sister?” she asks.
“Twins.” I answer as I buckle my seat belt.
Her eyes dart up to mine with genuine interest, “Really?”
“Yep.”
“That’s so cool. My niece and nephew are fraternal twins.” She smiles that heart-stopping smile again and I swear my ability to form a sentence goes straight out the window. “Ever since they were born I’ve been intrigued by research on twins and twin studies. Interesting stuff.”
“Well, you don’t want to research these twins. Trust me.”
She laughs, and if her smile hadn’t already knocked me on my ass, her laugh would have. It was ethereal, it suited her other angelic qualities…like her voice and her eyes and her smile…
“I sense there is a definite warning there,” she says, still laughing.
“Yes. It says ‘Proceed With Caution.’”
“You’re funny, Trevor Monroe.” I love the way my full name rolls off her tongue. Sara puts the key in the ignition and turns on the truck. The rumble of the engine cuts off conversation in the back. She grabs a small, black, wireless device from the dash and clips it to the strap of her tank top. I’m completely mesmerized by her simple movements.
Sara taps the roof of the truck through her open window, pops it into gear, and we’re off. She presses a button on the steering wheel and a red light blinks on the wireless device. When she speaks, her voice comes through the speakers.
“Hey everyone, thanks for choosing Sand Tours. I’m Sara Sands, and I’ll be your guide today.”
******Okay, now that you have a bit of a feel for the book, let me share some of my thoughts on it.  I adore Jennifer, both as an author and a person.  She is as sweet and inspiring as her stories, and I am proud to call her friend after the fan girl in me sought her out after reading Our Moon.  Hearts in the Sand is special to me for reasons beyond the simple fact that it is a great story.  I am honored to be one of Jennifer’s beta readers, and was thrilled and flattered when she asked me to be her alpha reader on this one.  Unfortunately circumstances in my life only allowed me to fulfill the role for the first 8 or so chapters,  but I can’t even describe the feeling of watching the process of bringing a book together, and offer feedback.  I sincerely hope to have another chance in the future when things settle down a bit for my family.
Trevor intrigued me in Our Moon.  He handled the tragic circumstances stoicly, and did an amazing job of carrying so many burdens on his shoulders.  If anyone deserves some fun, and an epic it romance, it is this man, forced to grow up so much so quickly, with never a complaint.
I have had the pleasure of visiting North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and it is the perfect setting for both the fun and the romance.  (Quick side note that I don’t think Jennifer will mind me mentioning, another author who has a lot in common with Jennifer, both as a person and an author, Maria Bernard, also has a sweet rockstar romance set  on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.  If you enjoy Hearts in the Sand, I recommend checking out Ms. Bernard’s Wherever Girl while you wait (impatiently I am sure) for JACT 3.)
Sara is such a great heroine to match with Trevor.  I loved her within the first few sentences involving her character.  She has a spunk I love, she is fun and funny, and she is so loving and protective.  She has more responsibilities than she should rightly have (hmmmm…..who else does that sound like?)  She has done a fantastic job of running the business she has put her heart and soul into and has great business acumen.  As each layer is pulled back, I fell a bit more in love with her.  How could Trevor not?
The dramas are heart wrenching, the laughs are the belly aching kind, the romance is sweet and sexy, and the sense of family, in all the different forms it takes on in this book are inspiring.  A must read, from an up and coming author I will be proud to say I knew her when.  I can’t wait for whatever she brings us next.  She is one of few authors that I don’t need a blurb or hint as to what the story will be – I will eagerly read it.******
Blog Tour: Our Moon by Jennifer L. Allen
Welcoming  Jennifer L. Allen today with a stop on her blog tour for her debut novel, Our Moon.  This one takes a very unique twist on the rockstar romance, and managed to get get a few tears from my jaded eyes.  My full review at the end of this post.
Title: Our Moon
Author: Jennifer L. Allen
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Ally Monroe can’t remember her name, let alone the eighteen years of her life before a car accident put her in a year-long coma. She wakes up to the reality that her parents are dead and she has amnesia.Released from her long-term care facility to live with her twin brother, Alex, and older brother, Trevor, Ally tries to piece together what she can while attempting to live her life again. Enter Chase Baker, guitarist for her brothers’ rock band, JACT. There is something about him that Ally just can’t resist, but the mysteries of her past are looming in the back of her mind, threatening to destroy anything she tries to build with him.
Do Ally and Chase have a chance? Or is there a secret in Ally’s past that may get in the way?
“These smell delicious,” he says as he sets the cookies down on the folding tray table I pulled out from the rack beside the entertainment center.
“Thanks, I came up with the recipe myself,” I tell him. “Well, I picked apart a few different recipes to form this one recipe.”
“So this is a Frankenstein cookie?” he asks as he lifts one to his mouth. That mouth…Full lips concealing perfectly white teeth. Sigh.
“Ha ha. If you’re too afraid to try my concoction, you don’t have to,” I tease. Am I flirting with him? Stop it, Ally!
Chase grins, letting me know he was only teasing, and shoves the entire cookie in his mouth.
“Oh my gosh, that’s so gross,” I laugh.
He smiles as he chews. Then he closes his eyes and groans. And my heart. Just. Stops.
“This is so good, Ally,” he moans through his chewing.
My mind is completely in the gutter now as I stare at him, completely unabashed. I’m sure if his eyes were open, instead of closed in cookie ecstasy, he would see the pure hunger I have for him, not the cookies, in my eyes as I sit here and imagine the various other situations where I would love to hear him say those words.
I try to shake it off but not before he opens his eyes and catches me staring at him. When his eyes widen, I know he sees what I was hoping he wouldn’t. I catch a similar look in his eyes before I turn my head away and shove a cookie in my own mouth.
Not my best move, that’s for sure, especially when I start choking on a crumb. I quickly swallow down the cookie in my mouth with a chug of milk and proceed to try and cough out the crumb.
Chase pats my back. “You okay?” he asks, concern etching his voice.
I nod as I take another sip of milk. “Wrong pipe,” I rasp out.
Out of the corner of my eye, I swear I see a small grin on his face. I’m so embarrassed. If I thought it was embarrassing having Chase witness my anxiety attack, this is so much worse. First, he catches me looking like I want to eat him. Then, he watches me stuff a whole cookie into my mouth and proceed to choke on it. This is just great. Why can’t I just be normal?
I live in South Carolina with my husband and our fur-kids. By day I’m an office manager, and by night I am a student, starting my final semester towards my BA in Psychology. I’ll be starting grad school in the fall. When I’m not at work or taking classes, I am either reading or writing. Books have always been a passion! I also enjoy spending time with my family, traveling to new places, and music.
My Reading and Writing History
I started reading when I was young, I loved Golden Books, especially the mini-ones you’d get in a kid’s meal! As a preteen I read lots of R.L. Stine, and even some Stephen King! I hated the assigned readings in school because I didn’t like being told what to read, so I never read those.  As a young adult, I found interest in James Patterson – I love his crime dramas! I took a break from reading for fun for a bit when I decided to get my college degree and had to read loads of text books. But it was all over once I read Hopeless by Colleen Hoover, as recommended by my sister. New Adult/Contemporary Romance is my genre of choice, to read and to write. I probably average reading a book or more a day. It’s a great addiction.
I’ve always enjoyed writing to an extent. I always liked to journal and blog. Since I’ve been reading new adult romance novels, I have been having ideas for what might be a great story line for a book. I fought with myself for a long time before finally starting my first book. I have no idea where it’s going to lead me, but you’ll never know unless you try.
My Review
This debut novel was very easy for me to give 5 stars to. What was extremely difficult was putting it down after I started it, and I had it read in just about one sitting, using my Kindle app on my phone for the first time just so I could take it with me.
Just when I start to think there are no new directions to take with the rockstar romance, something like this comes up and simply blows me away.  I got so swept up in this girl who wakes from a long coma with no memories at all of her past, and she comes home with her two brothers and their band that she apparently had been very involved with.  Her confusing attraction to one of the band members, and her brothers’ surprise at hearing her hum an unreleased tune written while she was in a coma.
This is a great, clean romance that I consider a great read even without the rockstar twist, but, of course, for me, that pushes everything over the top.  If your only goal is down and dirty smut, this is not the book you are looking for, but give it a chance anyway because it is a really great romance.   It managed to bring moisture to my eyes on more than one occasion – wait, what?  I do not cry at books!  It was so easy to get emotionally involved and I loved every word.
Highly recommended.   Bonus note, that it is very well edited, making it even easier to read.  I will definitely be watching for more from this author.   A copy was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
